The Great Ends
The Great Ends of the Church are the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind the shelter, nurture, and
spiritual fellowship of the children of God the maintenance of divine worship the preservation of the truth the promotion
of social righteousness and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world.

Representation Information
The General Assembly meets annually and is comprised of an equal number of elder and minister commissioners, nominated by
local church sessions or ministers, and elected by the presbyteries. General Assembly Synods are geographic units of not
fewer than three presbyteries. Each of the 16 synods is comprised of an equal number of elder and minister commissioners,
elected by the presbyteries.
Presbyteries are geographic units consisting of all the churches and ministers within a certain district. Elder
commissioners to presbytery are elected by church sessions. There are 172 presbyteries. Over 2,267,118 members nationwide
comprise the 10,903 congregations in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
The local church is the basic unit or building block of our denomination and is where the mission of our church begins.
The local church is governed by the elders on session who are elected by the congregation. The Greek word
presbuteros, meaning elder, provides the name for our Presbyterian family of churches. The church is governed by
presbyters (elders and ministers of the Word and Sacrament) who are members of governing bodies, from the local church
session to the General Assembly.

Presbytery Structure
The Presbytery of Santa Barbara meets four times each year and is comprised of an equal number of:
Minister Commissioners (pastors, retired ministers and at-large minister members)
and Elder Commissioners (a representative group from our 30 churches, with representation
from each church according to church membership)
These committees report directly to the presbytery:
- Committee on Ministry
- Personnel
- Committee on Preparation for Ministry
- Church in the World
- Nominations
- Clergy Support
- Church Development
- Property and Finance
- Permanent Judicial Commission
- Education and Leadership Development
Presbytery Council is an elected body of 18 minister and lay members. The Presbytery Council is assigned the task of
coordinating and evaluating the work of the program and administrative committees of the presbytery (see above). The
Presbytery Council reports directly to the presbytery.
